What the eBay hatching egg ban says
For years eBay was one of the main places UK keepers went for hatching eggs, posted by breeders all over the country. That ended in spring 2025, when eBay UK's live animals policy was changed to include them. The part that matters is one sentence long.
"Live animals - including pets, vertebrate and invertebrate feeder animals, and hatching eggs - aren't allowed on eBay."
eBay UK, live animals policy, read on 2 October 2026
The only reason the page gives is that the policy "helps ensure that important government regulations are followed". It does not say which ones.
The Country Smallholder reported in May 2025 that eBay was taking down adverts for hatching eggs "as they classify them as 'live animals'". An eBay agent told the magazine the policy had changed on 20 March, and that it was "only being enforced in the UK". That still holds: eBay's American policy lists "fertilized eggs" among the few live things sellers may list, so breeders in the United States can carry on. Breeders here cannot.
The Poultry Club of Great Britain's response, quoted in the same report, was that it would "continue to encourage responsible breeding and the ethical exchange of hatching eggs and stock through private, regulated channels".

What an eBay search for hatching eggs finds now
We searched eBay UK for "hatching eggs" on 2 October 2026. It returned more than 1,000 results. The first thirty were incubators, egg turners, chick crumb, poultry grit and a nest box: everything needed to hatch an egg, except the egg.
eBay's own category pages are still there too. The one named Chicken Hatching Eggs showed 100 results that day, starting with a book on incubation, incubator thermometers, plastic dummy eggs and cardboard egg trays. Quail Hatching Eggs showed 24: thermometers, drinkers, red mite powder and egg boxes.
Google's shopping results for "eBay hatching eggs" were stranger still.
- Lifelike pigeon eggs, pack of 12, solid plastic replica £8.86
- Fizzy hatching dinosaur eggs £0.99
- Hatchimals, lot of 42 with 10 whole egg shells £19.99
- Hatching Highland cow "hatch and grow" water egg toy £2.24
None of them will hatch. If you landed here looking for real, fertile eggs, the next section is the one you want.
Where the hatching eggs went
The trade did not stop. It spread out across three kinds of alternative to eBay, and each has a different answer to the question that matters most when eggs travel by post: what happens if something goes wrong.
What buying on Broody looks like
- The price you see includes tracked postage. There is nothing to add up at the checkout.
- Your payment is held until the seller posts your eggs, and you can cancel for a full refund before then.
- Broken, short or not as described? Report it from your order within 14 days. Sellers aim to put it right within 48 hours, and Broody steps in if they don't.
- Buyers review sellers after the hatch, so a seller's record is there before you buy.
Used to sell your eggs on eBay?
Broody has no listing fees and no monthly fees. Commission is 15% on the first 10 clutches you sell in any 30 days, 10% on the next 10 and 5% after that, and it covers the card fees. Your share of each sale clears 10 days after you post the order and is paid out automatically every Monday. Your listings go to Google Shopping at no extra cost.
Not sure what to hatch?
The breed book picks ten well-loved breeds for each of six kinds of bird, with egg colours, hatching notes and a source for every fact.
Questions about eBay and hatching eggs
Can you still buy hatching eggs on eBay?
No, not on eBay UK. Hatching eggs have not been allowed there since 20 March 2025. A search there now returns incubators, chick feed and toy eggs, but no fertile eggs.
Can you still sell hatching eggs on eBay?
You cannot sell hatching eggs on eBay UK. Its live animals policy has included them since 20 March 2025, and listings are removed. eBay's American site still allows fertilised eggs, but that is no help to sellers here.
Can you buy chicken, duck or quail hatching eggs on eBay UK?
No. eBay UK's policy bans hatching eggs with no exception for any kind of bird, so chicken, duck and quail eggs are all excluded. Its category pages for chicken and quail hatching eggs still exist, but they list incubator parts, egg boxes and dummy eggs.
When did eBay ban hatching eggs?
eBay UK banned hatching eggs on 20 March 2025, according to an eBay agent quoted by The Country Smallholder.
Why did eBay ban hatching eggs?
eBay UK classes hatching eggs as live animals, which sellers may not list. The only reason its policy page gives is that the rule "helps ensure that important government regulations are followed".
Is the eBay hatching egg ban only in the UK?
As far as eBay has said, the ban on hatching eggs applies only in the UK. An eBay agent told The Country Smallholder in May 2025 that the rule was "only being enforced in the UK", and eBay's American policy still lists fertilised eggs among the live things sellers may list.
Has eBay lifted the ban on hatching eggs?
No. eBay UK's live animals policy still excluded hatching eggs when we read it on 2 October 2026.
Can I buy hatching eggs on eBay.com and have them sent to the UK?
Not in practice. Hatching eggs imported into Great Britain must be accompanied by a health certificate signed by an official vet or veterinary authority inspector in the exporting country, so a box posted by an overseas seller without one cannot legally be imported.
Is it still legal to sell hatching eggs in the UK?
Yes, selling hatching eggs is still legal in the UK. The ban is eBay's own policy: its page names no law, and the government publishes marketing standards for hatching egg producers and retailers. Anyone keeping poultry in England or Wales must register their birds, however few they keep, and Scotland has its own register. Inside a bird flu control zone eggs cannot be moved without a licence, so check the current rules before you post.
Where can I buy hatching eggs instead of eBay?
You can buy hatching eggs from a specialist marketplace such as Broody, from Facebook groups, or straight from a breeder's own website. Our comparison of where to buy hatching eggs in the UK sets out how each one handles payment, postage and problems.
Where can I sell my hatching eggs now?
Broody is built for selling hatching eggs: no listing or monthly fees, commission that falls the more you sell, and automatic weekly payouts. Seller sign-up is open now.
How much do hatching eggs cost?
The price of hatching eggs depends on the breed and how many are in the clutch. On 2 October 2026, out of season, the clutches in stock on Broody were priced from £15 to £40 delivered, with tracked postage included.
How do I hatch the eggs once they arrive?
There are two ways to hatch eggs: in an incubator or under a broody hen. Our sister site Eggs for Hatching has step-by-step guides to hatching eggs in an incubator and hatching under a broody hen.
Is eggsbay part of eBay?
No. eggsbay.co.uk is a guide run by the team behind Broody, a UK marketplace for hatching eggs. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to eBay.
